Supporting point for position paper

After, going through with the supporting points for my position paper I am very sure that I will be able to continue with my idea to tackle on "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson. I have four points to deal with the story.

My first point is about the way the people in the town acted during The Lottery day. I think it is ironic how the people in the town acted, because they supposed to be tense with the fact that it is The Lottery day and someone might die on this day. Yet, the town's people acting naturally as though nothing is going to happened.

My second point deal with the character Mr. Summer. Mr. Summer plays an ironic role in The Lottery, he was described as a good man who devote his time nad energy to the society. Yet, at the same tiem he is the one who hosted and keep The Lottery.

Next, my third point is about the role of Mrs. Delacroic. In the story, Mrs. Delacroic is Mrs. Hutchinson's friend, they seems to have a good relationship with each other. But, when Mrs. Hutchinson pick The Lottery, Mrs. Delacroic friendliness changed. She had become a person who willing to scarifice her own friend for her own good.

My fourth point, is about the role of Old Man Warner. Old Man Warner is the oldest man in the town, he seems to be a wise man who gives advices to the younger generation while on the other side he selfishly belief in The Lottery.

My last point is about Mrs. Hutchinson's family. Mrs. Hutchinson seems to have a happy family with a husband and her four children. Yet, everything change when she picks The Lottery, there was no more love from her family for her. Evryone tried to save their own skin.

Overall, I think this story is pathetic. How can a human being so hartless to carry out a stoning ritual. Therefore, we should think about the message that Shirley tried to get across, maybe this thing did happen in our own society.

Thesis statement for position paper approved

Finally, my thesis statement had been approved..it was a big releaf to me as I can now procede with my position paper.

My thesis statement for this position paper is "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson is a criticism towards the society pretentious behaviour. In this position paper I'm going to look at how Shiley Jackson used the characters in the story to reveal the pretentious behaviour of the society.

If we were to look at the background of the story, we can see that this story was written shortly after world war 2. At this time, the americans perceive themselves as 'good boy' who protect the world against any foreign evil. Therefore, this story had evoke protest during the time, because the people cannot accept the fact that face of evil can look like their next door neighbour. That is so shocking right? When I come across this background of this story, I notice that there must be some messages in the text that Shirley tried to convey. After several time reading the text, I notice that the characters in the story are playing an ironic role. Therefore, I have decided to uncover the message that Shirley tried to convey through close examination of the charcters in the story.

I was asked to read my version of 'Daedalus and Icarus' to the class today. I thought that I had done a quite good job for it, but there are a few comments that I need to take into consideration. I always find it easy to put conjunction as to tell a story such as therefore, consequently, after that etc. In order to add ideas into my story, but today I have learnt that it is not the way to do an adaptation and to tell a story using conjunction. Now I know that an adaptation version will have a better flow without conjunction =)
Another thing that I have learned today is the usefullness of an adaptation version in giving the students the overall idea of a story. 'Daedalus and Icarus' is not an easy text to read, especially for the students. Therefor, it will be usefull if teacher can help students to have the overview picture of the story using the adaptation version of teh story.

Hiii...

Hiii...I'm so happy being back here sharing my journal again =D. This is my last sem in UPM before going back to IPTI, I have a mix feeling about going back to Johor Bharu and leaving UPM. Sometimes, I feel excited that I'm going back to IPTI but at the same time I'm afraid that I will miss UPM and won't be able to adapt myself with Institute life. Anyway, life has to go on and I'm going to do my best for my project paper. My first task for project paper course is to come out with a Position Paper. But, firstly I need to come out with a thesis statement in which I can put foward my argument for the literary text that I chose. I feel nervous of going about to choose the right literature text and the right argument, it wasn't an easy task as I need to go through all the literature texts that I have learnt over the past years. I hope I will be able to decide the right text as soon as possible =(
